Polysomnography (PSG), also known as a sleep study, is the main test required to diagnose sleep disorders.
It is most often used to diagnose sleep apnea but is also widely used to diagnose other conditions such as narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. It is a comprehensive test that records a variety of body functions during sleep and is usually done overnight in a hospital setting.
Measurements includes EEG (electrical activity of the brain), EOG (electrical activity of the eye), EMG (electrical activity of the muscle), ECG (electrical activity of the heart), respiratory effort, breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels and audiovisual recording.
